What is Inner Peace and How Do You Find It?

Life can get chaotic, there’s no doubt about it. With growing challenges and stress, it’s easy to get pulled into a negative mental and emotional state; but just because outside circumstances get difficult doesn’t mean that you have to be pulled down into them.

While your outside reality may be filled with things to do, places to be and difficulties to overcome, your inner reality has the potential to be calm and peaceful, a place where you can come back to rest and recharge whenever you need.

Too many people keep themselves in a negative state, constantly mulling over problems and difficulties, and too often people are working against themselves, allowing their inner selves to be pulling into a state of turmoil and challenge; but it doesn’t have to be that way. You can be still and calm even when the world around you is in chaos. You can have inner peace.

What is Inner Peace?

Inner Peace is the ability to feel at peace even when the world around you isn’t doing so well. Having inner peace means that if your life is going great, you’re feeling peaceful and calm and if your life is filled with problems and difficulties, you still feel peaceful and calm. It’s the ability to find some sort of equilibrium within you so that no matter what the circumstances are outside, you are able to come back into this state of peace.

I like to call it home, because that is what it feels like, comfortable and warm and safe. It’s the reassurance that everything will be alright and that you can overcome anything and everything because the Universe has your back.

I used to be afraid of Inner Peace, strangely enough. I felt that inner peace meant boring and uneventful. I though it meant no more adventure and excitement, which I like very much. I thought that finding inner peace would cause me to lose my sense of self (which is ridiculous, considering that finding inner peace is actually a sense of finding yourself). This was the ego talking, and the chaos, fear and anxiety which had been living rent free in my head for so long that they didn’t want to leave.

Inner peace is not losing yourself or your personality at all. It’s finding that part of you that is filled with ease and comfort and reassurance. It’s finding your sense of home. Finding inner peace is sort of like finding a place you can go back to when things are difficult.

Of course, inner peace doesn’t mean you never struggle, that’s part of life, but it does mean you are able to get past difficulties with more ease and less stress.

Inner peace also connects you to the present moment. Sometimes we are so wrapped up in our thoughts that we lose sight of the present and we stop living in the now. Our thoughts are powerful and magical, but if we are constantly entertaining them, we can easily miss the wonderful opportunities and the simple joys of life.

What Inner Peace means

  • Less worry, stress and anxiety. Inner peace helps you to go through life with more ease, accepting things as they come and helping you to release things which are no longer serving you.
  • Less dwelling over the past. There’s nothing wrong with reevaluating the past, but when we are constantly stuck there, we miss the now.
  • Less anxiety of the future. Inner peace helps to release the need to control everything and helps you to focus on positive outcomes that could happen, rather than the negative.
  • Being more grounded. Inner peace helps us to be in the now and feel fully. This means you are able to feel more joy, love and excitement. It also means that when negative emotions or thoughts arrive, you are more likely to quickly acknowledge them and find a way to release them.
  • Finding confidence. Inner peace brings a sense of confidence into your life. Without worry and anxiety, you learn to accept yourself as you are and appreciate all you have to offer.

It’s also equally important to know what Inner Peace is not. Oftentimes, people have a misconception about the idea of Inner Peace. It’s easy to think of a Buddhist monk, or some other type of master sitting perfectly still in a state of peace and having a quiet and seemingly boring life.

This isn’t true in the slightest. In fact, Inner Peace makes you feel more alive, more aware, and suddenly, the world gets brighter and things seem to make more sense.

What Inner Peace Isn’t

  • Losing yourself, your personality or the quirks which make you unique
  • Living a boring, uneventful life
  • Letting situations and opportunities for joy and fun pass you by
  • Being a quiet, timid person who doesn’t express themselves fully because you keep it all inside

The Path to Inner Peace

The path to inner peace is different for everyone, but it’s always within you, waiting to be discovered. I believe that peace is our natural state, just like when we are happy and free from negativity when we were very young, peace is already inside of you, it has just been covered and hidden by things such as anxiety, fear, and negative thinking.

Because we have spent so much of our lives in a state of chaos and stress, it can be difficult to find Inner Peace. This is often because we have many negative beliefs blocking our path to Inner Peace.

In order to obtain Inner Peace, you have to work within yourself and look into the deepest parts of your soul. This means re-evaluating everything you believe and asking yourself why it is that you believe that in the first place.

Some negative beliefs blocking your path to Inner Peace may be

  • The belief that you are not worthy. This is a common belief that many people have. Their sense of worth is low, often from the difficulties they have gone through in life, but having a low sense of worth can be harmful in many aspects of your life. If you don’t believe yourself to be worthy of peace and happiness, you’ll find yourself in a constant state of inner chaos, because that is what you believe you deserve.
  • The belief that your outward circumstances dictate your inner state. It’s easy to believe this because we’ve gotten so used to giving our power away, and we’ve cultivated the belief that we are not in control of ourselves. However, it’s important to understand that no matter what is going on in your outside reality, you can always create a welcoming, peaceful space within you. No person, place or thing can control your inner state.
  • The belief that someone else can give you happiness and peace. No one else can give you peace and happiness, and they shouldn’t be able to either. By believing that someone else is the source of your joy and calm, you are giving them all your power. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the company of another person, but it’s important to remember that you are the source of your own happiness and peace. You choose to experience joy around them through your own definition of happiness and the value you place on the things that bring you joy.
  • The belief that you constantly need to be doing something. With life being so fast-paced nowadays, it’s easy to feel that you’re falling behind and that you need to be doing something. It might feel strange to take some time for yourself, especially if you’re used to always working and moving; but being still has its own incredible benefits, and finding a balance is an important aspect to finding Inner Peace. It’s okay to be still, relax, and take some time just to breathe. You’ll find that, when you allow yourselves to rest in this space, peace begins to appear into other areas of your life, and you are able to carry it with you wherever you go.

Practices for Cultivating Inner Peace

Some things may work better for you, while others may not resonate, but here are a few useful practices which may help you in your journey.

  • Reading books on mindfulness and peace. When you focus on what you want, such as peace and calm, you invite more of it into your life. You may also find yourself feeling more determined and motivated, and you might learn a new perspective or two. There are many great teachers out there who can help, just make sure to find the best ones that resonate with you.
  • Meditation. This is one of the quickest ways to find inner peace, though it’s not always the easiest. It can feel strange or uncomfortable at first but meditation isn’t just ‘doing nothing.’ It’s a way to train your brain to quiet down and come back into your senses. While meditating, you become more aware of your breath, your heart and your mind. Connecting all these together can often lead to Inner Peace.
  • Yoga. Yoga is a great alternative to traditional meditation if you find it difficult to meditate. Yoga is not just a form of exercise but it’s also a moving meditation which connects your mind to your body, bringing you back to the present moment. While practicing yoga, there is often very little room for negativity, anxiety or fear.
  • Tai Chi. Similar to yoga, tai chi is a moving meditation which allows you to connect to your mind and body. This also allows you to move ‘chi’ or energy, helping to cleanse your energetic field of negativity.
  • Art. Art is a great path to inner peace. Not only does it allow you to express yourself, but you are able to connect with your creative spirit and release any negative emotions out onto the page.
  • Sound Healing. Sound healing helps to calm and realign you into a state of peace and ease. This can be done through playing a tuning fork, sound bowl, or even listening to gentle music. Sound healing not only calms you down, but helps to cleanse out your energetic field, helping you to feel more refreshed and at ease.

The path to finding inner peace isn’t always a straight one. There are, more often than not, many bumps in the road, but it’s important to not give up and keep moving forward.

There is a place inside of you that has probably been hidden and buried for a while, but when you find it, the world will become much easier to navigate. Things will likely make more sense and you may find that there’s a sense of freedom that comes along with it.

Inner peace doesn’t mean you stop feeling everything else, it just means that you are able to choose to feel more fully. When you have inner peace, you can choose what you want to keep and let go of any negativity that enters your space much quicker. It can be a difficult road, and it won’t always be perfect, but the peace, joy, love and awareness you find are well worth the effort.
